Botkins Community Park

The Botkins Community Park is where the K thru 2nd grade baseball and most softball games are played.

The first official baseball game was played at the Botkins Community Park on March 31, 1998. The varsity diamond is named "Volunteer Field" due to the large number of volunteers that helped make the park and its baseball diamonds a reality.

The park features baseball & softball diamonds, soccer fields and a track for high school sports. Along with walking trails, playground, shelter house, basketball court, tennis courts, dog park and batting cage for public use.

Cole Field

Cole Field is located near the center of Botkins and is primarily used by 3rd thru 6th grade baseball & junior high softball teams.

In 1926-1927 Albert Metz and Joe Heckler along with volunteers, his tractor and horses equipped with slip scoops scraped dirt into the current diamond lying just west of the Botkins Athletic Complex.  Dirt from the wet, low areas was moved from east to west creating the elevation for the bleachers that currently stand. It was after this Botkins fielded an impressive ball team under the management Ernie Cole, where anything less than an 80-90% winning percentage was considered a failure for many years. Night baseball was played early in Botkins.  A traveling company installed temporary lights and hired Albert Metz to furnish his big thrashing tractor to power the generator.  After WWII the current expansion exploded with six permanent poles and a total of forty lights were installed in 1946 at a total cost of $3,934.03.  On July 19th, 1946 Emerson “Pat” Koenig as Master of Ceremonies and President of the Civic Club dedicated Cole Field with “Night Baseball”. A fast pitch game was first played followed by a Botkins Redlegs game with New Knoxville.   In the fall of 1948 the backstop was added at the cost of $345.00.  The bleachers were completed in the summer of 1949 for $791.30.  Both the bleachers and the backstop were designed, and construction overseen by Frank Maurer.  The bleacher seats were designed to be wide in depth in hopes of building a roof, press box, and installing folding seats on the steps.  Much of the money for these projects was raised by Stag Parties and Fish Fries.  Fritz Gehrlich was a prime organizer, and Lawrence “Brownie” Brown fried the first fish on his kitchen wood-fired range.

The Botkins School used the field for many years for its baseball team until the new Community Park was opened in 1998.

A shorter infield fence was added to host little leuge games and other recent upgrades include a renovated playing surface with the addition of grass on the sides and new infield dirt, bases and drainage.  This has ensured the enjoyment of locals to watch the game of baseball for what is hoped to be many more generations to come.
